Morocco Earthquake: Communities unite to rehabilitate devastated remote villages

Central Morocco, September 15th – In the wake of a powerful earthquake that struck the Al Haouz Province of Morocco, numerous communities find themselves in desperate need of assistance. The earthquake has left homes destroyed, families displaced, and essential supplies in scarcity, UNICEF estimated over 100,000 children in danger and over 50,000 homes destroyed, however, these numbers are likely underestimated. A week after the event, there remain towns that are still inaccessible, as some Moroccan villages are so remote they are only accessible by foot or donkey.

Seleena Johal, a close member of the affected community, and President Jamal Imerhane of the Imlil region, are joining forces to coordinate and allocate vital supplies. The earthquake has severely impacted 6,920 rural villages as well as the touristic city of Marrakesh.

To provide immediate and long-term assistance to these communities, a fundraising campaign has been initiated. Even small contributions will make a significant difference in the lives of those affected.

Immediate needs include:

  • Blankets: To protect against the harsh mountain climate, especially since the cold season has begun and winter is coming - snowfall and rain are eminent in the mountains.

  • Clearing the Roads and fallen Debris (entire villages have been destroyed): Funding is needed to restore access to isolated areas and rebuild these villages.

  • Medical Care: Supplies, first aid kits, rehabilitation, and sanitation services are needed now and in the future, as well as support for healthcare professionals, nurses and doctors.

  • Transportation: Ensuring transport for aid into these villages as well as those who need to evacuate.

  • Temporary Shelter: Tents and temporary housing for displaced families.

  • Rebuilding: Funds for the reconstruction of homes, schools, roads and infrastructure.

The focus is now looking ahead as extreme winter conditions are about to hit the Atlas Mountains. Strategies are being investigated on how to best deal with the mass devastation.

People from Morocco and abroad have mobilized themselves at an incredibly rapid pace to physically get to Ground Zero with supplies and aid with the rescue mission and through social media campaigns and online fundraising - while collaborating and networking with established ties with the traditional indigenous communities of the Atlas Mountains.

But the work has only just begun, experts are looking at an estimated 6 months to a year to stabilize the area, and begin work on rebuilding and rehousing.  Long term efforts will be required, and the solidarity of the people of Morocco will be needed to rebuild lives - stronger and more united than ever.

Every Contribution Counts: Your support, regardless of size, can make a substantial difference in the lives of those facing the aftermath of this traumatic earthquake. Together, we can help these resilient communities get back on their feet. See our GoFundMe Campaign at: gofund.me/91ab429a
